Bone-on-Bone Knee Osteoarthritis Treatment Explained

Are your knees feeling stiff? Are you having problem rolling over in bed, getting in and out of the car, or struggling going up or down stairs? It could be osteoarthritis of the knee and decreased joint space. When pain starts, many people will take anti-inflammatory medications until they can’t take it any longer, then they call their doctor. Primary care providers typically refer all joint pain to an orthopedic specialist or surgeon.

It is common for the surgeon to order x-rays of the joint to get an inside look at the joint. One area that will be examined closely is the joint space. This will help the provider determine if osteoarthritis is present in the joint. There are 4 stages of osteoarthritis and imaging will be very helpful in determining the success rate of IMAC regenerative medicine programs for your knees.

What is knee osteoarthritis? What causes it?

According to the Mayo Clinic, Osteoarthritis occurs when the cartilage that cushions the ends of bones in your joints gradually deteriorates. Cartilage is a firm, slippery tissue that enables nearly frictionless joint motion. Eventually, if the cartilage wears down completely, bone will rub on bone. One analogy that our clinicians often use is comparing cartilage to the brake pads in your car. Over time, the brake pads wear down and require service. While we can’t replace the cartilage in your knee, we can service the cartilage to keep you moving and living an active lifestyle.

Osteoarthritis has often been referred to as a “wear and tear” disease. But besides the breakdown of cartilage, osteoarthritis affects the entire joint. It causes changes in the bone and deterioration of the connective tissues that hold the joint together and attach muscle to bone. It also causes inflammation of the joint lining.

At IMAC, we know that arthritis in the joint is the body’s response to instability. Although you may not be able to “feel” the instability, it happens over time with regular wear and tear on the ligaments that support the joint. This is common in the hip and knee.

When the ligaments in the knee become too lax, the body deposits bone in the joint to help create stability. Now, arthritis is present in the knee!

What treatments are available for bone-on-bone joints and knee osteoarthritis?

IMAC provides non-surgical treatments to bring stability back into the knee joint to signal the body to stop the arthritis process. Physical therapists at our centers often use high-level bracing to help bring stability and correct alignment to the knee joint.

Our experienced medical professionals may use viscosupplementation injections to lubricate the joint to prime it for orthobiologics. IMAC uses cellular therapy treatments and platelet rich plasma, both derived from the patient’s tissues and blood, to regenerate the joint. Regenerative rehabilitation will heal micro tears in the ligaments that have occurred with regular wear and tear. This will bring stability back to the joint. Cellular therapy treatments can be used to regrow cartilage in the knee joint.

Together, IMAC’s regenerative rehabilitation protocols bring life back into arthritic joints.

My orthopedic surgeon told me I am a candidate for a total knee replacement. Should I come to IMAC first?

Yes. IMAC wants to see you before you go under the knife. Joint replacement surgery is painful, costly, involves a lengthy recovery, and has risks.

Prior to choosing surgery, come to IMAC for a comprehensive assessment with our experienced team of medical doctors. We will tell you if you are a candidate for treatment at our clinics and teach you more about the amazing healing potential that lies within your body’s own tissues and blood.

How do I make an appointment at IMAC Regeneration Centers?

Find a clinic near you, and call for an immediate appointment. Other medical clinics are known to have a long waiting list for appointments. Not at IMAC. People in pain cannot wait! No referral is needed at any of our centers in Kentucky, Tennessee, Missouri, or Illinois.

Here is Sally’s Story about Overcoming Knee Osteoarthritis with IMAC Regeneration Centers

Sally was told by 3 orthopedic surgeons that she needed a total knee replacement, but she didn’t want to go down that road because she was afraid of surgery, the recovery, the rehab, and negative side effects friends had told her about.

Looking for a non-surgical solution, Sally found IMAC Regeneration Centers and had treatment for knee osteoarthritis. Her treatment included platelet-rich plasma, cellular therapy, injections, and physical therapy. The results are obvious! Look at that beautiful joint space! Sally’s knee is no longer bone-on-bone.

Sally is feeling so great that she has returned to IMAC for treatment on her shoulder. We’re planning her care around an upcoming trip to Thailand… something she would have never considered before having treatment on her knees! Her travel plans include visiting ancient temples (hello, stairs!) and an elephant preserve.

Sally exercises 5 times a week, and can now walk, get in and out of the car, and roll over in bed without pain.

We are so happy for our friend, Sally!
