Fighting for Her Life – How Stem Cell Therapy is Helping Wendy Black Fight Parkinson’s Disease

17 years ago, Wendy Black, an avid fitness instructor and gym owner, was spending her time raising her family and running a successful business.  She loved kick-boxing, taught 5 am Boot Camps 3 times per week, was a personal trainer and loved riding her Harley with her husband.  Then, at age 40, Wendy was diagnosed with Parkinson’s Disease leaving her healthy and active lifestyle abruptly changed.  She could no longer speak clearly, write legibly or walk without falling.  “I couldn’t read my writing at all, I had to hang onto my husband or friends to walk and I had to avoid public gatherings because nobody could hear or understand me.”

10 years ago, Wendy made the decision to have Deep Brain Stimulator surgery to help her function.  She managed her symptoms with the help of the surgery and medications for several years following the surgery, but in November of 2016 she noticed a drastic decline.  It was during this time a friend of hers had a conversation with Ozzie Smith about his new regenerative medicine clinic and the positive outcomes Parkinson’s patients were experiencing from treatments utilizing adult stem cell therapy.  The information was passed on to Wendy, and she called Ozzie Smith IMAC Regeneration Center right away.

After an exam and health evaluation, the medial team at Ozzie Smith Center determined Wendy would be a great candidate for the stem cell protocol for Parkinson’s.  Wendy had her first intrathecal stem cell procedure in November 2016 and has completed one phase of customized physical therapy.  The positive changes she has experienced have been remarkable. “I have had so many compliments about my voice and how much clearer my speech is.  I took notes the other day and was actually able to read them! Two months ago I was unable to “hop”. Last week I started hopping from foot to foot and then started punching! My husband and I are both ecstatic!”

Wendy is looking forward to the continued improvement as she completes phase 2 and 3 over the next few months at the Ozzie Smith Center.  She is very excited to return to her active lifestyle of teaching Boot Camp Classes and playing with her 4 grandsons, and Wendy loves the relationships she has built with the staff at Ozzie Smith Center. “The staff is top notch and Paige (my PT GIRL) is the bomb. Everyone has been so positive and professional. I am very impressed.”

We are so happy for Wendy and her decision to receive the Parkinson’s stem cell treatment protocol at Ozzie Smith Center! She has been able to regain much of the quality of life she was hoping for and continues to make great strides toward reaching all her goals.  She is a tough fighter, never willing to back down from the challenges life has brought her way.  Sharing both her love of boxing and the diagnosis of Parkinson’s Disease with legend Muhammad Ali, his famous quote about champions rings true of Wendy….”Champions are made from something they have deep inside them-a desire, a dream, a vision. They have to have the skill, and the will. But the will must be stronger than the skill.” – Muhammad Ali
